We've all experienced it—that tight feeling in your neck or back that seems to disappear the moment you hear a satisfying "crack." For many people, it becomes a habit. A quick twist, a pull, a pop, and for a moment everything feels better. But that relief is often short-lived, and over time, self-manipulation may be doing more harm than good.
The popping sound you hear is usually caused by tiny gas bubbles rapidly changing within the fluid of the joint, a normal process known as cavitation. While this can create a temporary feeling of release, it doesn't fix the reason your body felt stiff in the first place.
One of the biggest problems with self-cracking is that it isn't precise. Most people repeatedly manipulate the joints that already move easily because they're the ones that will "pop." Meanwhile, the joints that are truly restricted often remain untouched. This can reinforce poor movement patterns instead of correcting them.

Repeatedly forcing the same joints can also place unnecessary stress on the supporting ligaments and joint capsule. Over time, this may reduce the stability of the joint and leave surrounding muscles working even harder to protect the area. Rather than breaking the cycle, self-manipulation can encourage your body to crave that temporary release more and more often.
Your neck deserves particular care. Although serious complications are very uncommon, forceful self-manipulation has been linked to muscle strains, nerve irritation, and, in rare cases, injury to the blood vessels that supply the brain. These risks are why health professionals recommend having persistent neck or back pain properly assessed rather than repeatedly "cracking" it yourself.
