Sciatica: Beyond Painkillers- Causes, Chiropractic Care & Treatment Options

November 01, 2026•4 min read

Have you ever experienced a sharp, shooting pain travelling from your lower back into your buttock or leg? Perhaps you've noticed tingling, numbness or a burning sensation.

These symptoms may be associated with sciatica, a condition involving the nervous system.

The encouraging news is that many people recover well from sciatica. Research suggests chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation and movement-based treatment, may help some people manage their symptoms and return to comfortable activity.

What Is Sciatica?

Your nervous system is your body's communication network. It carries information between your brain, spinal cord, muscles and joints, helping you sense your surroundings and coordinate movement.

Nerves leaving your lower spine join to form the sciatic nerve, which travels through your buttock and down your leg.

Sciatica occurs when these nerve roots become irritated or compressed. A bulging spinal disc, inflammation or age-related changes may contribute.

Common symptoms include:

  • Shooting or burning pain down one leg

  • Tingling or pins and needles

  • Numbness in the leg or foot

  • Occasionally, weakness in the leg

  • Discomfort with sitting, bending or walking

Why Does Sciatica Cause Pain?

Pain is not simply a direct measure of tissue damage. It is an experience produced by your nervous system.

When spinal nerves become irritated, the signals travelling through them can change. Your nervous system may become more sensitive, and movements that were previously comfortable can become painful.

Your brain also processes information about movement, previous experiences and your body's current condition when producing pain.

This means that even when nerve irritation is present, the intensity of pain doesn't always reflect the amount of physical damage.

Importantly, your nervous system can change and adapt. Appropriate treatment, comfortable movement and gradually rebuilding activity may help reduce sensitivity and restore confidence.

How Can Chiropractic Help Your Nervous System?

Chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between your spine, nervous system and movement.

Your spinal joints and surrounding muscles contain sensory receptors that continually provide information to your brain about movement and body position.

Hands-on chiropractic treatment stimulates these sensory systems and may influence how pain and movement information is processed.

Spinal manipulation and mobilisation may help reduce discomfort and improve movement in suitable patients. However, the precise neurological mechanisms remain under investigation.

At Burpengary Chiropractic Centre, care may include:

  • Spinal manipulation or mobilisation: Gentle, individually selected techniques to help manage pain and movement restrictions.

  • Muscle and soft tissue treatment: Addressing associated muscle discomfort.

  • Movement and exercise: Helping your nervous system and body regain confidence with everyday activities.

  • Education: Understanding pain and nerve sensitivity so you can move with greater confidence.

    What Does Research Tell Us?

Research provides encouraging findings for spinal manipulation in sciatica.

A 2006 clinical trial found that spinal manipulation improved pain outcomes compared with simulated treatment in patients with acute sciatica associated with disc protrusion.

A 2025 systematic review of 50 clinical trials involving 4,920 participants also identified spinal manipulation among treatments associated with the greatest short-term reductions in leg pain in chronic sciatica.

International guidelines recognise manual therapy, including spinal manipulation and mobilisation, as an option when combined with exercise.

Chiropractic Care Compared With Medication

Medications can help some people manage symptoms, but their benefits for sciatica vary.

Anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen may offer short-term relief, although evidence specifically for sciatica is limited.

Medications targeting nerve pain, including pregabalin and gabapentin, have not consistently shown meaningful benefits for sciatica and can cause side effects.

Long-term opioid use is also discouraged.

Chiropractic offers a non-drug approach that combines hands-on care with movement, exercise and education. Rather than focusing only on reducing symptoms, treatment can also help people rebuild their movement and everyday function.

Neither approach is best for everyone, and some people require coordinated medical and chiropractic care.

Supporting Your Recovery

At Burpengary Chiropractic Centre, our chiropractors bring a combined 90 years of clinical experience to musculoskeletal care.

We understand that sciatica involves more than your lower back. Your nervous system, movement, sensitivity and individual circumstances all contribute to your experience.

Our aim is to help you understand your symptoms, manage discomfort and return to the activities you enjoy.
